Guidelines for mountaineering expeditions in Uttara Khand Himalayas The state of Uttarakhand also known as Devbhumi, or the Land of Gods, wears a mantle of mountain ranges, which endow it with a breathtaking natural beauty and sheer range of diversity. 83 peaks in Uttarakhand himalayas are open to mountaineers. These high mountain areas cover a substantial geographical area of the State, forming important catchments of major river systems in India, and are a repository of rich Himalayan biodiversity. It is a major challenge to ensure a balance between allowing mountaineering activities in such an area with the need to prserve fragile Himalayan environment for posterity. Mountaineering is emerging as one of the popular adventure sports in Uttarakhand and needs to be promoted in a regulated manner with adequate environmental safeguards, so that the world will have sustained tourism interest in high mountain areas of Uttarakhand within permissible limits. |
